Jose Fernandez gone at 24 due to a tragic boating accident.

Well-wishes for the Miami community and all affected by this horrible tragedy.

What a shame.

I'm not a Marlins fan (or much of a baseball fan in general), and not being in the same division as the Giants,  MIA isn't covered very much out here in NorCal.  That said, he was one of the only players I knew of on the MIA roster, and he was definitely a player to watch for.  He seemed to actually enjoy playing baseball, which seems like it's practically outlawed by Brian McCann and the rest of the "unwritten rules" club.

He was a rising star in MLB and an icon in South Florida.  He was going to be the latest in a line of pitchers to defect from Cuba and make their mark in baseball.  A young life cut short due to a tragic accident.  My prayers are with his family and teammates.

It sucks to ever lose anyone so young. RIP Jose!

It was a very moving tribute at the game last night.

I used to be a huge Marlins fan, but getting married and moving away from South Florida have made my life busier and I just don't have the time to follow them like I used to.  But I was still really saddened to hear the news.  One of the things that getting older (52) has done is to make me much more aware of just how precious life is and how sad death is, especially when it is someone so young.  I ain't gonna lie, I shed a couple tears from the story.
