I know that this particular topic doesn't really cater to this board, but I do enjoy the Oscar ceremony, with all its flaws.

I'm watching many of the nominated films this year.  So far, I've seen 18 of them.  Too many to individually review, but if anyone wants to discuss anything, let me know.

Have you watched anything nominated that you feel was worthy?

I haven't watched Silence yet.  I finally worked all the way through the best picture nominations, of which it isn't one.

My current ranking for best picture choices:

1) La La Land
2) Arrival
3) Lion
4) Hell or High Water
5) Manchester By the Sea
6) Fences
7) Moonlight
Cool Hacksaw Ridge
9) Hidden Figures

I've only seen Arrival and Hacksaw Ridge on that list. Hacksaw Ridge was pretty good, but I didn't like Arrival. It was OK I guess, but it isn't worthy of winning any award in my opinion.

On an unrelated note, is it possible to disable the Cool smiley in the message board software?  I've literally never seen anyone use it on purpose and the only thing it ever does is mess up usage of "8)".

So what's the big deal with La La Land?  My wife watched 30 minutes of it and said it was shit...she loves Mama Mia and Sound of Music, so it's not because it's a muscical.

I've only seen two on this list, Arrival and Hacksaw Ridge. I really was not that impressed with Arrival, which is strange, given my background as a language junkie and cryptographer.

I really enjoyed Hacksaw Ridge though, and will probably watch that one again.

La La Land is a mix of old 1950s Hollywood musicals and modern settings and film-making.

The opening shot alone is one of the most impressive things you'll see in film this year.

I thought the whole movie was super great, but it's one of those movies that comes in and out of being a musical.  I guess that turns people off.

----

I love Arrival.  Can't say enough good about it.

----

Hacksaw Ridge was ham-fisted, to me.

----

I just watched Lion.  That movie was incredible. I hope everyone watches it.

I thought Arrival was meh.  Wasn't bad, but not Oscar worthy IMO.

Ehhh I admit, most of these I'd never heard of,or thought they didn't look very interesting to me...Most years,I tend to not like most of the movies nominated,or won the academy awards. I think last year was a bit of an aberration (I like quite a few Mad max,the Martian,Room,Trumbo, sicaro, star wars,Ex Machina)

I watched 13th.  It's on Netflix.  Pretty good.  It's all stuff that I knew about, but seeing it organized like it was painted an interesting picture.  I also found its conclusion eye-opening and something that I hadn't considered.

Went to the movies with my daughter this past weekend. She picked out A Cure for Wellness. A very long and strange movie. Don't take any non prescription pharmaceuticals before watching that shit.
