This came as shock to me, although living for 50+ years after being diagnosed with ALS is truly impressive.

I'm at a loss for words. A sad day. Probably not helped by the fact that it happened exactly two years since my dad died.

Rest in peace, Dr. Hawking.

I never really knew what his medical issues were, then when I saw he had died I started wondering what his issues were.  Finally, one of the news reports mentioned that he was diagnosed with ALS back when he was like 21, so it truly is impressive that he survived this long with that disease.
