Great call and design, but bad execution prevents what could've been a BIG play.  Would've like to see Tannehill put this ball on more of a rope and/or move the safety with his eyes.

Think you posted a link to the wrong video. This one is a short toss to Drake that goes for 18 yards.

The one you are referencing appears to be this one:

With regards to the play, after having watched it a bunch of times, I don't agree with the "looking off" and putting more zip on it would have required being able to step into the throw (which is hard when you're getting clobbered).

Try slo-mo'ing the play. I get that the talking heads also mentioned looking off the safety, but WHEN do you want Tannehill to do that? The throw is IMMEDIATE. He takes the snap, sets his feet while finding the receiver and throws (then gets hit). At the time Tannehill throws, Drake is about 1 yard past the defender and the safety is about 18 yards downfield and maybe 10 yards to the inside.

If you really want to criticize something, it would be for Tannehill to have gotten the ball out a bit earlier. It's about as quick a pass downfield as possible, but maybe just shaving a tenth of a second off could have made all the difference.

Drake does something on the play that is MASSIVELY undervalued: He looks in and locates the ball very early. This enables him to adjust his route. Even if the throw were shorter or more in/out, he could have easily adjusted. Receivers like that can make a quarterback look good and it's something our "real" receivers aren't very consistent at.

With the D lining up the way it did, I wish the Dolphins had an option to make it a back shoulder throw instead.

I agree with both of you.  Tannehill should have looked off the safety.  But, I firmly believe that, as stated, he doesn't have time to do stuff like that because he has at best 2 seconds to throw thanks to our patchwork o-line.

Unitl they solidify the o-line, asking Tannehill to play like a pro QB is trying to squeeze gold out of a turnip.

Tannehill had time to freeze the safety during his drop, but instead looks immediatley to Drake which moves the safety playside much quicker than needed, ultimately disrupting it.  I agree though, another option would’ve been to throw it sooner.
