Hated by throngs of BoSox fans across New England (erroneously in my opinion), he was a great baseball player.  Died much to young at 69.

RIP MR. Buckner. You have to wonder how much the stress from that one play over a rather otherwise spectacular career shortened his life.

Was hated.  And yes erroneously.  But I think that the vast majority of Red Sox fans forgave him at least a decade ago.

The guy had an excellent career and was a really good ballplayer, including being a very solid defensive player.  But as the other thread stated, sometimes players are defined by one play in their career.

The crazy thing is that he was getting long in the tooth at the time and was not a very fast runner to begin with.   A lot of expert predict that even if he had fielded that ball cleanly, he wouldn't have beaten Wilson to the bag.

But Knight wouldn’t have scored on the play.
