Just thought of a new acronym because of a personal situation my family is going through.

Long story short, my business is not what it used to be because of COVID.   People are still requesting repairs to their HVAC systems, but no one is buying new ones because they can't afford it.   Additionally I've had to have my employees get tested on a regular basis and have had to work short staffed because one employee actually had it and others have been exposed through contact tracing.

To make up for some of the shortfall, my wife, who hasn't worked since a few years after we got married, has become a substitute teacher for Miami-Dade County Public Schools.  She has been concentrating on mostly middle and high school because she feels it's easier to teach one subject 6-7 times per day as opposed to 6-7 different subjects.

These days, the kids are issued school laptops and do almost all of their assignments on them.  Most days, she doesn't even have to teach.  Her job is basically to monitor the students and make sure they are on task the entire time.  This has been a big problem for her as she has caught numerous students on inappropriate sites (YouTube, etc...), texting on their phones, or playing games.

When she came home one night to complain to me about it, she also told me that an administrator told her that school laptops can be monitored by school personnel and they can be taken over as well.  We both went over the NSFW acronym that I see a lot on here and everywhere else.  I suggested that she tell the students that inappropriate sites and games are Not Safe For School (NSFS)

There's a difference between goofing off or wandering off-task, and watching something that is wholly inappropriate in the classroom (sex/violence/language/etc).

For example, if you're supposed to be working on a science lab and you're watching some YouTube science experiment video, you should get back to what you're supposed to be doing, but it's not like you're watching a video that's Not Safe For School.

Another example would be if you're supposed to be working on homework during study time, but you're reading a Harry Potter book.  To call something like Harry Potter or the Narnia books "Not Safe For School" is to expand the term past the point of any useful meaning.

Not sure why being labelled as NSFW/NSFS refers to sexual content only.   I was of the opinion that your work computers are monitored, so anything you do on them that is not work related can cost you your job, sexual content or not.

By the same token of reasoning, kids going onto sites unrelated to school while they are in class can and should get in trouble.

You obviously don't understand the tern NSFW then. Occasionally posts on boards like this one get labeled NSFW.  Granted for many employees accessing this site would get you fired, the label is not for those employees.  There are other employees who are allowed to access non-work related sites with some restrictions.  I have had multiple jobs where accessing the 4 sports related sections on this site would not be an issue but the political discussions would have gotten me fired.  NSFW typically means that the subsection of a website contains material that differs from the site in general and might get some one in trouble.

Policy was you can use your computer to access news, weather, sports email etc.  However engaging in partisan politics was forbidden. I probably would not have gotten in trouble for reading “Trump is a moron “ but posting that from a work computer could have  gotten me fired.
