They bought into the Madoff scam and thought they would be earning so much in interest every year that at the time this was a brilliant move on their part. Of course, to think you are getting 15% interest orever is quite stupid. I think they knew it was a scam, they just thought they were benefitting form others being scammed rather than realizing they were the dopes.
