That's one example .. another would be that a house may have a small strip of grass on one side and the neighbor house is right next to this stop of land.

so you may have windows that are about 4 feet from each other across a strip of grass (or concrete)

New housing developments in CA are similar.  You have a "backyard" about the size of a small bedroom, and on one side of the house you could reach out a window and touch your neighbor's house.
