Again, this is not a sick burn coming from Trump supporters/defenders/apologists.
So he is saying Trump will say anything to win an argument and you take that as a supporter, defender, apologist? Hahaha

For my own sanity, I'm just going to pretend that this new speaker is going to be a normal person and try to pass the normal legislation to fund the two things I care about most.  Outside of that, I don't expect much.

Despite all the evidence that suggests otherwise.

No, I take both of you as Trump supporters/defenders/apologists because of all the time you spend supporting/defending/apologizing for Trump; e.g. "I'm not pro-Trump but this whole January 6 thing is a witch hunt."

And this new Speaker of the House won't change anything.  The entire Republican Party is a cult devoted to Trump's service; Johnson will be no different than McCarthy in this regard.  The same motion-to-vacate rule exists, meaning the first time Johnson allows a vote to go through that does something crazy like funding the Department of Education, any of the Freedom Caucus wackos can call for another replacement Speaker.

Now that a new Speaker is in place, the House can get back to the important business of impeaching Joe Biden for having a son who did drugs and had sex.

Except for a very small minority, none of them on either side are normal people. They're all the same, they're just on opposite ends of the not-normal spectrum. It's all political theatre ,distraction, and entertainment at this point.

What are the 2 things you care about the most about funding?

In the immediate, I want the government funded and not shut down.  I also want to fund Ukraine defense.  I think that is smart use of resources and will help us geopolitically for a small cost, plus it's just the right thing to do.  I also see this issue being poisoned, and it has support to pass.  I fear if we drag our feet on this one, it may not happen.  Also, I like that in this scenario, there is a defined goal and stopping point.

I also would be in favor of Israel and humanitarian aid packages, but I am less concerned about their immediacy and I think that stuff will happen anyway because the idea hasn't been poisoned yet.

I would agree that the government needs to be funded. However, funding other governments shouldn't be part of that equation. At the end of the day Ukraine and Israel aren't and shouldn't be our problem. I would also disagree that it's a "small cost". Our debt level is out of control and with interest rates rising servicing that debt will become unsustainable at some point. We're simply broke at this point and the effects will get much worse for US citizens over time.

We have too many problems within this country that need to be fixed where our money could be better spent. The US government should put the interests of US citizens over the interests of foreign countries. We give out too much money and aid to countries that provide absolutely nothing in return. Paying other countries to be our friends isn't a good strategy.

^ I'm just not an isolationist like that.

Plus, money isn't a finite resource.  You will make more of it if you position yourself better on the world stage.  Us beating back Russian influence on that side of the world is good for us.  It's a global society and a global economy.  But to have another country put in the blood and we just have to write the check, that's an easy one for me.  Plus, you can't just wait to take on the bad things until they're at your doorstep.

Edit:

I know you guys think I'm an alarmist, but I feel that America is at a crossroads and if we don't do the right things, there very literally may not be an America anymore the way we understand it.  Democracy is under siege.  Fascism needs to be beaten back both home and abroad and completely rooted out of our political system.  I think a lot of this stuff is related and I think that once a few things happen, the entire fascist takeover attempt will topple, but we have to do what is necessary to ensure that it happens.

I would be interested to hear more about who and what you think this Fascist threat actually is. In my opinion the biggest threats to this country are the unfettered spending/debt, weakening of national defense, and the current invasion of illegal aliens. Russia isn't a threat for us. If they take Ukraine, they aren't coming for us next. That's nonsense in my opinion.

The fascist threat is the faction that invaded the Capitol on January 6 in a failed attempt to overthrow our government.

But to hear some around here tell it, we should be more concerned with poor brown immigrants than the people trying to invade Congress, shouting chants of the elected officials they want to kill.  These same people will tell you that in order to prevent the dollar from being devalued over time through excessive printing of money, the appropriate course of action is to... stop paying our debts and crash the dollar immediately.

I'm sure you do see the items you listed as "threats to this country," but they are threats for reasons that I doubt most people would prioritize.  Destroying the value of the dollar and crashing the economy (by defaulting on our national debt) all in an effort to make sure that working-class people aren't living more comfortably than you think they deserve to is not really a worthwhile tradeoff for most people.

Holy crap you are ridiculously over using hyperbole! Let's pretend they actually had guns on this tour from security and actually had taken over the capital for an hour or so. Do you really think anyone thought that was going to topple our government let alone not be able to be stopped by the local police? You give a couple of hundred numbskulls way too much credit as being super villains. For your goofy argument I will even say all 1200 or so although most were just walking around and being led by security.  I honestly hope you really do believe that but I know better. hahaha

The goal was to intimidate congress into overturning the election.  They came real close, and they were aided and abetted by the now speaker of the house.

I feel like we're on different planets.

Donald Trump tried to overturn an election, effectively overthrowing the government and he has cronies in power at various levels.  If this isn't beaten back, I think America dies.  This isn't a left/right thing.  I believe in democracy and when you lose on votes and issues, you can't just win anyway.  There must be consequence for this, not only for the one man, but for the movement behind him and those that are aiding at doing anything but holding him accountable for his crimes against the nation.

Democracy is something you can't take for granted.

A man tried to overthrow the elected government of the US and, so far, seems to have the support of about half the country.  That is unacceptable.  It is the issue that matters to America more than all others combined.  Democracy matters most.

Why do you think guns matter in this case?  They obviously didn't need guns to take over the Capitol and successfully block the counting of electoral votes.  The reason why they (eventually) failed was not because they didn't have enough guns, but because Trump is a coward and decided not to overrule Pence when Pence deployed the National Guard to the Capitol (a power that the Vice President does not legally possess).

Let me make this crystal clear: if the Joint Chiefs had decided to follow the letter of the Constitution, the National Guard would not have been deployed to the Capitol until Trump himself ordered it.  That is how close we came to a coup of our government.

Had you paid attention to any of the multiple hearings into what happened on January 6, you would know that this ridiculous lie is too absurd to propose with a straight face.  There are many, many videos of the violence perpetrated on January 6.  But instead, you'll keep parroting the Fox News viewpoint that January 6 was a peaceful protest or whatever.
