I'm surprised no one has posted about this yet. My initial reaction to this news was that this could be bad news for McDaniel. Even though I didn't put much weight into Aikman's Monday night football comments about McDaniel I still thought that someone outside the organization would be more likely to want someone from outside the organization which would probably mean getting rid of McDaniel, but the more I read the more it seems like Ross wants a GM that has nothing to do with the coaching side of the house. Sounds like he wants a guy that does nothing but evaluates players. That doesn't sound like someone that is going to pick the head coach to me, that sounds like someone who's just being asked to fix the roster. Perhaps Ross has already decided that he wants McDaniel to be the head coach next year and wants a GM that can supply him the talent he needs. I'd be curious to know what Aikman thinks of that strategy. Jerry Jones was the GM for the Cowboys when Aikman was there, I'm sure he has some ideas about what makes a good GM, but I doubt it looks anything like Jerry Jones.

He's been working on this for a few weeks, even prior to calling the Steelers game. He has reached out to many, if not all, of the top GMs in the league and compiled a list of reccomendations on the up and comers around the league. It sounds like they are looking for someone hungry to prove themselves more than experienced GMs.

Apparently McDaniel is going to be part of the GM search... really? According to Joe Rose, the first list of 6 candidates has 3x 49ers staff names on it.

I don't get it. He's already had a guy who basically gave him virtually everything he wanted. Trade everything to get Tyreek. Sign Tua for whatever he wants. Waddle too (that cap hit is still to come). Chubb and Ramsey are available, mortgage the whole farm to get them too (by gutting the rest of the defense). It didn't work.

McDaniel has a good part to do with our lack of spread of talent, and salary cap mess.

If our new GM is a one and out (like McDaniel could be next year), then fine. Blow the whole thing up for 2027. We don't need a real GM then, just a fall guy...

But we're looking for another one in 12 months time or less.

Plus there isn't a thread here already, but...

McDaniel walking into meetings with a baseball bat. Like that's supposed to be an aggressive attitude to counter his nerd, Beavis & Butthead persona.

Really? WTF?

I read today that this wasn't true.  I think I saw that they'll get his "approval" but that he won't be part of the interview process.

There will be 6 people in the zoom calls -- Aikman, Ross, Garfinkle, Marino, Ross' son in law who owns some kinds of sports marketing thing, and ....someone else...can't remember.

I think you meant to say they'll get McDaniels opinion, not his "approval". I don't think the decision is his to make, it's Ross's decision. I mean I think that's what you meant anyway, but I just wanted to put that in for clarification. McDaniel isn't deciding anything.

McDaniel said himself during an interview that he expected involved in the process of finding a new GM. I took that as something more than just getting his approval.

He's worked with the 3 SF candidates, so of course they are going to ask him for his feedback on those 3 guys, but that's it. He won't be in the meetings and he won't be deciding who they choose. Essentially his being involved has already happened.

Yeah, I've since heard that everyone else within the Dolphins were immediately backpedaling that comment, saying McDaniel definitely won't be in the meetings and part of the interview process.

Still, it seemed such a weird thing for McDaniel to blurt out in the first place. Not that McDaniel saying weird things isn't necessarily that unusual.

I think the comments were taken out of context a bit. My understanding is someone asked McDaniel if he would be involved in the GM search process and he said yes. Is that incorrect based on what we now know? No. Did a reporter read that to mean that he would be in on the meetings? Sounds like it. Did the reporter make the mistake or did McDaniel? I'm inclined to believe the reporter made some assumptions about what McDaniel said that just weren't true. I want to clarify that I haven't actually seen video of the question or McDaniel's answer, I'm just going by what I've read.
