Um, no.  Actually.  National Guard runs under a completely different set of P&P's.  And I wasn't speaking of martial law.

Okay, but just to be clear, NG units must be federalized to act as law enforcement - right?  This was a big talking point during Hurricane Katrina.

I misinterpreted the "people being slaughtered" comment and the focus of your suggestions of deployment.  This misunderstanding might explain runtheball's question of military might.  How would military engineers stop people from being slaughtered in the streets?  I suppose it could be interpreted that you meant deploying a medic on every street corner.  Wink

"I'm hearing an awful lot of talk about Sadan and the middle East, yet nothing about the people being slaughtered and dying in our own streets every day.  Hmmmm.  As an officer in the United States Military I openly question how out might would better serve our own people.

Keeping us free and unimpeded is nothing to sneeze at.  Rescue/recovery/rebuilding efforts, no matter how impeded by local government, aren't anything to sneeze at either.

Military might does not just equal guns, bombs and explosions.
Yeah,  because we know you governmentally trained killing machines would just love to use a lot of guns, bombs and explosions when preventing "people being slaughtered" in the streets.  Roll Eyes  Seriously, I'm not sure how this little factoid fits into the conversation.

When in Rome... so here is my own little factoid.

Water is wet.

Now all we need is for runtheball or Frimp to chime is with, "That may be news to the left-wingers."  and karma will be restored.

I'm a dumbass right winger, so please explain how military might doesn't equal just weapons.  What else does military might equal ?

Since you called yourself out like that I'll go ahead and repost Maine's post for you.  Please reread the paragraph above the statement you are quoting from for the answer. It's  really pretty self explanatory. By the way ... you left out the key word "just" in your quote.

Um, no.  Actually.  National Guard runs under a completely different set of P&P's.  And I wasn't speaking of martial law.  I was speaking about engineers that could make a difference with construction, food units that could provide for areas of the country that are hard to get to.

Military might does not just equal guns, bombs and explosions.

I'm not sure it is.  If the people in Maine have been without power and water their entire lives, and have no prospect for ever getting either, then it would valid in my opinion.
I was speaking about poverty in the United States in general, not specifically about people in Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire.
Poverty isn't as absolute in the USA as it is in other countries .... is it?  Although most government programs seemed to be designed to keep people poor and dependent, people do move out of poverty all the time.  It isn't easy, and it isn't the norm (largely due to the side effects of the afore mentioned programs), but it does happen.

Don't the impoverished of most other countries have significantly less hope of getting out of poverty?
