Traditional wisdom says that you can't win a fantasy league with a rookie-heavy roster.

Hanley Ramirez, Kevin Youkilis, Freddy Sanchez, Francisco Liriano, Jered Weaver and Cole Hamels think the Padres can beat conventional wisdom (and whoever's on the other side of the boxscore) to do that this season. These aren't normal rookies...these are sandlot monsters who just happen to be first year players.  Who will step up to knock the Padres' wunderkinds back down to earth?

Thanks, Pats...I'd added him in some other leagues the past week and figured I'd better find a place for him in this league before someone else put the scoop on him. I'd been watching a lot of the Pirates games lately because of Jason Bay, and it seemed like Freddy was hitting the hell out of the ball every single game. He's a scrappy little sucker!

Like all players though...Freddy hit the trade block the moment he arrived at our clubhouse. If you feel like offering up a pitcher better than the ones I can find on waivers, I'd have no problem dealing him to ya.

After this week, we will be halfway through our regular season. Currently we have a tie at the top of the standings between myself and Boston Mafia. AZ is 2.5 games back and CF is 6 back.

It sure does look like 5 of the 6 playoff spots have teams eager to jump right into them (add Maine to the four teams listed above), and I see a massive dogfight down the stretch for the 6th and final playoff spot.

Would someone please slap Boston Mafia down a little bit? I don't face him again until week 17, and it seems like I'm the only team who's been able to "really" handle him at all so far this season.

I'd been picking him up off of waivers in other leagues as a spot starter...I'm not sure that his 5.61 era and low K/ip rate really give him much trade value at this point. If you need to drop him to waivers to pick up a better starter, I'm guessing he'll still be there after waivers clear.

Speaking of trades though, raptors...did you ever take a look at the offer I sent for Cabrera last week? If you're not looking to deal him, let me know and I'll pull the offer and try going after someone else.

Three days left in the week...something about unhatched chickens comes to mind. Wink

Atl won't keep the big lead on AZ, and I'm about to put away Raptors (like I always do on the weekend). Come Monday, you'll still be staring up at the Who's Your Padre juggernaut.

At the end of the year, you'll be able to able to say "I was the only team to take more than 8 points against the eventual league champ all season."

You should appreciate that...  Grin

I still think you'll make a run at the 6th playoff spot before it's done...

Raptorsfan...in case you were focused too closely on the Marlins broom action to catch what "the rest" of the baseball world has done to completely fukk up your Sunday sports, allow me to catch you up to speed.

You had to be feeling pretty good about your Maine Gladiators when you woke up this morning... You had a ridiculous 11-3 lead over the juggernaut Padres squad with only one day to go.

I woke up, not feeling bummed out about that score, but a little aggravated by it. We were fairly close in most of the categories we were losing, but needed to have good production across the board if we were going to have any comeback chance. I posted the following smack line on my team page whilst sipping my coffee:

"Down 11-3 going into Sunday action...need another Padres monster finish to flip this."

You see...last day heroics are something that Who's Your Padre? know well. We've unleashed so much hell on our opponents on Sundays this season that the Vatican has declared our existence as evil. Ask J-Money...I stole 5 points from him on the final day. Ask Lil_B... The Padres come up big in the late innings, period.

Especially today...on Padres Day.

Well, so it is posted...so it shall be done. My sleeping-giant lumberjacks woke up and broke out the big axes...

David Wright: 3 for 4, HR, 2 runs, 5 RBIs
Ryan Howard: 2 for 4, 2B, HR, run, 4 RBIs
Michael Young: 5 for 5, 2B, HR, 3 runs, 3 RBIs
Chase Utley: 2 for 5, 3 runs, RBI
Jason Bay: 2 for 4, 2B, HR, run, RBI
Bobby Abreu: 1 for 2, 2 walks, run, RBI

...with Youkilis, Crisp and Francoeur yet to hit the field tonight.

OK...I took care of my side of the boxscore, but I still needed you to choke mightily. When I saw that 5, count-em, F-I-V-E of your starters...weren't starting (Rios, Delgado, Konerko, Molina, Hillenbrand), I understood that the stage was set for the Gladiators' collapse. So far today, Gladiators' bats have gone 0 for 11.

You still have 2 players remaining (Manny and Renteria), but you no longer have that 11-3 lead. While your team was wondering how that chicken bone got lodged in your trachea, I swiped 8 of your 11 points, and 1 of the points we were tied in.

I'm now up 12-3 after the most insane Sunday massacre of the year. Manny and Edgar aren't going to be enough...

(edited for atrocious grammar and because Young actually went 5 for 5)

We're only halfway through the season, for that matter... you'll be fine. This was just a very wild come from behind win for us.

I get Maine next...I think I better get points early.

Only because the final statline looks so bitchin<g>... Our 9 hitters and 3 starting pitchers today:

9 Hitters: 21 for 36, 6 HRs, 3 doubles, 14 runs, 23 RBIs, 3 steals. (.583 BA, .634 OBP, 1.166 SLG)
3 Pitchers: 3 wins, 20.2 innings, 3 earned runs

Sure wish my team could do that once or twice every week...
