St. Patty's day is a lame holiday.  It's turned into the celebration of alcohol.

If you aren't Irish, St. Patty's day is just an excuse to drink.
Go donate some of that booze money to my charitable head shaving instead. You'll feel better about yourself!

St Patty's day is only good because people wear green. My favorite color.

Though I didn't know it was today.

Its not, Read Tony's post again. He lives in Hoboken, and they celebrate it 2 weeks ealry so the bars don't lose money to NYC.

Yeah, so? Nothing wrong with that. Many holidays are indirect celebrations of alcohol or involve getting drunk (i.e: New Years, Independance Day), at least this holiday does not pretend we are celebrating anything else besides drinking.

Hmmm...I thought it was today because there's a St. Patty's Day 4 miler today, too.  I guess they just do it early.  For some unknown reason.

Probably so the runners have a chance to get back into "drinking shape" before the real St. Patty's Day!

This is a fucking joke. It is a direct slap in the face to Irish who were considered nothing more than drunken apes when they arrived here. Also St. Patrick is a revered religious icon. How do you justify drinking till you puke and fall down as an appropriate homage to a group of people and a saint? Would we even consider drinking malt liquor and eating soul food to celebrate MLK? Hell no there would be a well deserved uproar. But it is alright to belittle the Irish because they are white.

I agree with BSmooth's assessment.  St. Patrick and his band of bishops drove fierce British invaders out of Ireland, hence the term "He chased the snakes out of Ireland".  Where the wearing of green and drinking till you can't stand up came from is beyond me.  I used to use St. Patrick's Day as an excuse to get falling-down drunk, but I don't anymore.  It lacks the appeal it used to have when I was in college.

Don't get so defensive that we only ruin this Irish holiday. Look at what we do to Cinco de Mayo.
