I'm not sure he was really a lock for cooperstown, but the guy threw away what could have been a hell of a career. That Mets team was something else. I would have loved to have seen what that locker room looked like.
Doc does not have the stats for the HOF. 194-112 lifetime win / loss record won't get you in.
It seems to be like he was hoping for jail, and a long sentence. Maybe he has realized it might be the only way to get clean and stay clean. I wish him well.
I agree that he does not have the stats for Cooperstown, but let's assume that he stayed clean all those years and pitched like he did from '84 to '88. He'd then be in Cooperstown for sure.
