Pitfall! (1982, Atari 2600)
Activision“Pitfall!†is said to be the first platform game ever created. It features a character running through the jungle collecting treasures over a 20 minute time limit, while skirting death from the dangers of quicksand, scorpions, rattlesnakes, fire, and the like. It is best known for its sequences where you time jumps on swinging vines to avoid rolling logs and tar pits. It was a technical achievement at the time, featuring non-flickering multicolored sprites on a system with relatively primitive hardware. This, combined with its unique gameplay, made it the best selling game for Atari, and resulted in many ports and a number of sequels.
