Concert review: Mudvayne

This was part of a local radio staion's Earthday Birthday celebration. The concert was all day and included acts such as Mudvayne, Rob Zombie, Staind, Shinedown, etc.

Let me just say the freak flag was flying yesterday. The people watching was a great part of the show as a whole because there was plenty to look at. The toilets were in bad shape as a few of the portables were full to the top and some of the restrooms clogged up and overflowed as well. As far as the music goes it was pretty good. This is not my typical kind of music and I only listen to it over the radio. I typically do not buy CDs for any of these bands. I don't understand the use of Mudvayne as the headliner though. They were absolutely horrible. After the first couple songs the crowd started a mass exit. I'm not sure if they were just beat from a full day or if they were as disappointing for everyone else. Overall it was a good time and a definite experience, but I don't expect to be going next year.

Earthday Birthday used to kick ass. But, it is a result of crappy music. I was at the one a few years back when Double Drive performed. What ever happened to them?

jtex and I saw Mudvayne when they were touring with the Summer Sanitarium tour about 3 years ago.  I must admit - of the 5 bands on the stage that day, I liked Mudvayne the least.  Their music, to me, sounds like nothing but random screaming and unintelligible guitar riffs.  Maybe it was just that show, but they sound alot better in a studio.

Compared to Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, and Metallica, on that same stage, in that same venue, Mudvayne sucked that day.

So Mudvayne is one of "those" bands, huh?  Great in studio and awful in person?  That's how I felt about Soundgarten.  Saw them a few times, and Chris Cornell sounded awful each time.

How about horrible in studio AND horrible in person?

They are one of those bands that turn up the microphones too loud, guitar riffs that only include heavy E and A string based chords, and ever song has something lyrically about "the pain" or whatever bullshit.

Mudvayne sucked, but on that day Brian, Deftones were worse.  The lead singer's microphone was not working for 1/2 the concert, the band looked like they didn't wanna be there, they were not into it at all, and for about 3/4 of the show, their lead guitarist literally had his back turned to the audience.  At least Mudvayne's band members were singing along, they looked like they were very excited to be there touring with Metallica, and they were making eye contact with the crowd and throwing picks and stuff like that.

Maybe I thought the Deftones were better cause I actually like some of their songs.  I think you just hated them cause their roadies apparently couldn't set up their equipment properly.

That and the fact that I thought they sucked!

To me, they sounded just like every other one of those shitty new rock bands...when their equipment actually worked.

Limp Bizkit probably was the big surprise of that concert.  It was surprisingly loud and energetic, and there was a lot of energy between the band and the crowd.

I have had the (mis)fortune of working a Mudvane concert in a small venue (800 people). I couldn't begin to judge their talent level because of the volume. I had earplugs in and my hands over my ers and I still had a hard time thinking. The people up front near the speakers were actually crying it hurt their ears so bad, and were fighting the crowd to get away fro the speakers. It was definately the loudest show I have ever been around, but the volume was so overpowering, that I couldn't even begin to try and enjoy it.
