Is it possible for someone to have the same IP# show up on forum posts while supposedly traveling over several continents?

Defense ... you really need to calm down on trying to antagonize people.   If you can't add to the post you might need to just skip it.

Run ... if they are overseas aren't they still going through the same service provider and server here at home?  If so I would think it wold be the same. I'm guessing Fau would know best.

I don't know.

"Here at home" is another continent.  From that continent they've claimed to have traveled to other continents.

Run, in almost all situations, they would have a new IP.

There are a couple of points here...

First, the IP of their computer is assigned by the ISP they are connecting through. Unless you have dialup and make a long-distance call, you are almost certainly going to be connecting through a different ISP if you're traveling. In the case of DSL or Cable connections, the IP is usually (almost always) assigned to the router/cable modem. So if you take your laptop with you, you are going to show up as a different IP if you post from a friends connection, even if he has the same ISP as you.

Second, and I touched on this slightly, the IP that shows up isn't necessarily that of the COMPUTER. Often, the computer will have a "local" IP (usually 10.x.x.x, 172.x.x.x.x or 192.x.x.x). All the computers on your connection will then show up with the IP address of your router/cable modem.

The point here is that it's perfectly possible to connect to a site through your home network even if you are on a different continent. It's not common, but it's actually quite SENSIBLE from a security perspective to access sites via an encrypted connection to a server at home instead of connecting directly. You can look up "ssh tunneling" for more information of this.

So, probable? No. Possible? Yes.

Should more people do this? Hell yes.

Traveled to other continents and posting at internet cafes no less.

And, Defense, this isn't someone who disagreed with him. This is someone who claims to be an Australian college professor, who is loaded with money. He comes across very snotty, and with a major holier than thou attitude, and says that he has been on a 'safari' of the southern hemisphere over the past several months. He posts these very long updates about his travels, and claims to be using internet cafes (He says he doesnt have a laptop.) to do so...And, he also has his 'daughter' update the board from home, using his log in.

The kicker here is that every single post whether it is supposedly from an internet cafe in India, or his 'daughter' posting for him at home has the same IP.

that's some shady shit then .. i'd say that's 99.999% bullshit then .. there's an infinitesimal chance he's using an internet cafe to VPN into his home computer to post .. but more than likely not
