Maybe the "shock" was from realizing that he didn't get to "run" the team. Maybe the "shock" was from realizing that they were putting him out there as a "token". If they were going to hold him to Tony's schedule, why "promote" him? Why fire the old guy? Why does this story come out the day they hire a new coach? What a shock, Bowles didn't get the job. Yet, a reason why Philbin gets the job, is because he was open to keeping Bowles as the DC. This just reeks of an arranged marriage.
