You're in the lobby of a building and trying to get on an elevator.  The building is busy but not overflowing.  The lobby contains six elevators.  As you're approaching the lobby you see an elevator door closing.  You can also see that the elevator is pretty packed already.

Do you stick your hand in the door and make it open, thereby making everyone on board wait even longer and cram into an already full car...or do wait for the door to close, hit the 'up' button and wait for one of the other five elevators to come to your floor?

I wait for the next one.

But, there are a LOT of people who are the rulers of the universe and too important and in a hurry to wait for the next one and have no problem expecting everyone to be less comfortable to save them 2 minutes.

Depends entirely on how big of a hurry I'm in... If no big rush, I wait. If I'm running late for an appointment, then I'm squeezing my 260 lbs in the "now" elevator.

I wait for the next one.  The extra 30 seconds won't kill me.

I wait for the next one.

Side note, I was at the airport and you have to ride an elevator in the parking garage to get to the tunnel to reach the terminals. The set-up if very similar to what you described. Four times the elvator door I was on popped open because someone kept pushing the button before the door closed. A that point I reached my limit and promptly held the door open and yelled at the guy to "Quit hitting the fucking button until after we have left, asshole."

I wait for the next one unless I'm already running late.

I wait.  I hate elevators enough without being squeezed in like a sardine.

I prefer taking the stairs. If I had bags, I'd wait. I hate being packed in with a bunch of people, elevator or no.

If I was in such a hurry to where I needed to hold up a bunch of other people, squeeze into an elevator and wait for everyone else's floor to get to mine I would just fly up the stairs.  Its a lot quicker anyways.

If I'm not in such a hurry I just wait.  I like my personal space not being invaded by someone else's armpit stench.

I'm waiting for the next one regardless of whether I'm in a hurry or not.  I just don't like being stuck with other people in an elevator.

I'll jog up the stairs and avoid stopping at every single floor and get to my destination faster anyways.
