QB Pat White a wildcard for the Wildcat?

by Edgar Thompson

INDIANAPOLIS - Pat White still wants to prove to NFL teams he’s a quarterback.

But if he can’t, White is prepared to do whatever it takes to play at the next level.

The Wildcat formation could be his way in.

“I think it gives me a better opportunity to help someone at the next level,” White said Saturday at the scouting combine.

White said he met with the Dolphins, who discussed a number of things with him, including the Wildcat.

“Hopefully I can help their offense,” White said.

White said he watched the Dolphins run the ‘Cat last season.

“I saw a few games with it,” he said. “Interesting. It gives defenses headaches. It gives them about 40 more minutes of film they have to focus on.”

White would be a wild card selection for a team looking to develop him into a secret weapon.

The all-time leading rusher in college football, a two-time Heisman finalist and the MVP of the Senior Bowl, White showed his versatility time and again.

But White is 6-foot, 197 pounds, played out of the shotgun at West Virginia and showed limitations as a passer. He’s not even ranked by ESPN among the top-20 passers at the combine.

White said a number of teams told him they expect him to play another position, while some haven’t close the door on him playing quarterback.

“I still want to be a quarterback, until someone tells me, ‘no,’” he said. “But I want to keep my options open.”

The Dolphins, or a number of the teams beginning to run the Wildcat, could have one for White.

“I want to help any way I can,” he said.
