If no weapon or violence was involved, I still think 15 years is seriously harsh. There are MURDERERS that get 15 years.

The guy sounds like he needs a good smack over the head and an ankle bracelet that alerts authorities if he comes within a mile of whomever he was stalking - after a few years in prison.

Personally, I don't car if he, or anyone, just nicely broke in to "steal the paintings off her wall".

There are good people and there are bad people.  Good people should not have to tolerate the actions of bad people.  Whether that means putting them in prison or 6 feet under... whichever is cheaper works for me.

This is exactly what I meant about the "Old West" mentality of hanging horse thieves. It's pathetic and shows a total lack of insight into the way humans are "wired". No, I'm not saying "society is to blame" or any such crap. Even if "society" actually WERE to blame, people still need to be held fully accountable for their actions.

Well, the thing here is that I'm glad you aren't a lawmaker or juror.

Someone decided Cecil was a danger to society and locked him up.  Had he not done anything wrong, we wouldn't be having this conversation.  The lesson:  Don't break in the homes of women who don't want to see you and you won't go to jail.

The reality is 15 years means a lot less if he behaves.  I'm guessing he never serves the entire term.

BTW, there is no violence or weapons used in selling drugs to kids, but that doesn't mean the sellers should get a break IMO.

Don't do a crime and you won't do time.  Pretty simple if you ask me.

This has gotten so far off topic... and I certainly share a nice chunk of the blame for that, so I'll let this be my last post on the subject ;-)

I disagree. There is real bodily harm being done when selling drugs to kids. The dealer is very responsible for the harm in a completely direct way.

This is one of those BS clichés that serve only to shut down discussion. There is no substance in it and, in and of itself, it makes no sense. Suppose we hung people for jaywalking. You could fire off the exact same "don't do the crime" line, but it would clearly be moronic.

Ok, if you don't dont commit crimes, you have nothing to worry about, regardless of how small or large the crime is or how harsh the penalty is.

MORONIC is right on the button.   An intelligent person would not need to use an absurd extreme to support his case.

Jaywalking is not a felony.  In most cases, jaywalking is a victimless crime.  It's a public safety issue.

What's pathetic is your denial that some people are wired wrong and will continue to offend as long as they're free.  "Very likely to reoffend" evel 3 sex offenders are an example.  The law dictates they must be let loose after a certain amount of time and then all we can do is wait for more victims.

Remember, you can't be sympathetic without being pathetic.

Nope.  It's the logic used by people who don't have to worry about going to jail.  If the police were arresting people for jaywalking, I wouldn't jaywalk.  It's smarter than going to jail and then crying foul.

What's moronic is going to jail or getting busted for banned substances 4 times.  I don't have those problems.

Sorry to lock this but this subject is so far off Dolphin topic it will never be back. I would lose my moderator status if I allowed this to continue!  Feel free to start another thread in off topic about do the crime ... do the time if you would like.  Grin
