Author Topic: Separate forum for political and religious threads?  (Read 7402 times)

No, this is not a thread to argue politics or religion.  There have been quite a few of those recently and a good number of them have been locked.

Fact of the matter is, both subjects are touchy and extremely volatile.  Threads containing those subjects have been known to quickly deteriorate into a bunch of personal attacks very easily.  I'm not blaming anyone in particular here.  I just think it would be a good idea to create a sixth forum on TDMMC for threads that deal with politics and religion, and put a warning that the content of this forum may be sensitive for some people.

I'd love to hear other TDMMCers opinions on this, especially the mods.

I don't see any need. Making a new forum will not change content, attitudes, or the locking of threads. Stay out if you want to stay out and stay civil if you choose to enter.

That's exactly my point.  Maybe if we created a separate forum and kept this kind of stuff contained, the mods could be a little more lenient about locking threads in that particular forum.

Then why wouldn't they just be more lenient in general. I still don't see a need for another forum.

I wouldn't really call it a need.... more like a convenience.

you're not the first one to come up with this.  This idea was presented a while back and Dave shot it down, much as he did here.

This is not a political message board.  Its a football message board focused on the Dolphins.  A forum dedicated to political and religion would just turn into a flame war and that's just not happening.

I think a lot of the political talk is because of the election.

In any case, the political/religious threads are usually labeled as such, so if you don't like them, just stay out.

I was going to push for a separate board for this type of topic, but while I pondered the matter on the way home one night, I watched the bush in front of my neighbor's house burst into flames, yet was not consumed. I then heard a deep booming voice call out from above

"Holy shit...my bush is on fire!!"

And I figured that was as close to God as I was ever going to get.

That isn't PC, Jeff.  Watch your mouth.  God loves George W. Bush.  Burning and all.

There's nothing worse than a forum with too many sub-sections.  Politics are religion heat up and then die down.  We're in an election year, so there's a lot there.

But, it will die down.

Also, people are free to talk about religion and politics, but I don't really want to create a separate section to encourage it.  The rules about those topics are the same as everything else.

There are at least two other Dolfan sites that have spiritual or religion threads as well political threads.  I'm not defending any point of view just sayin' ....

It was a good thought Tommy. But they are right. Its just gonna be the same shit , different day. Mods are gonna lock stuff up once they :

A) Don't agree with the opinion
B) Don't like the way the thread is going and want the last word
C) The poster isn't in their circle
d) All of the above

That's exactly why I brought this idea up.  If other sites can have it, why can't we?  Again, it's just an idea, and ultimately the decision is Dave's.

I asked for this back in June 2006 and it was also sumarily rejected :-)

Funny enough, you were one of the people who rejected the idea!

I agree.  Leave it as it is.  Anything that does not have anything to do with sports should go in this forum.  IMO, this board is set up perfectly.
