Most national companies have decent "sluglines."  A slugline a secondary positioning statement to the company's name.  McDonald's - "I'm loving it."  Verizon Wireless "We connect with you."  Things like that.

The mom and pops of the world generally have some pretty weird sluglines.

There is a local hardware store in my area, maybe 10 branches total, that specialize in things like woodstoves, farm animal feed, stuff like that.  Their slug line is "experience the experience."

Uh, what?  You sell BIRD FOOD.  I could see this slug line for something like Disney World.  But a place where I buy wood pellets for my stove?  Experience WHAT experience?

What are some of the bad slug lines for the mom and pops in your area?

There is also a Thai food place in the area that markets themselves as "good for the sole."  Not SOUL, mind you, but Sole.  The sole...of my shoe?  Huh?

^^^ That's a great tag though...

As someone who writes these professionally, I think most of the ones I see that were written by someone else are awful, and any that I actually wrote are brilliant and poignant on a level never achieved by other writers. Wink

The term slug lines though...to a writer, it means something different than this usage. It is a line used in a screenplay for the director's eyes only and usually explains a time shift in the scene or something along those lines.

In the media world - slugline is the secondary positioning statement of a company.  Get with the program, 'Stroke!  You've been around the tv / radio workd long enough to know that!

"All Hits" Z-100!  Primary...Z-100.  Slugline..."all hits."

Smiley

#1 in the #2 is pretty darned good, I think every state has one of those.  We have a porto-potty company called "Blow Brothers" that has the same one.

I wonder why radio abandoned a perfectly good term like "tagline" and use one that confuses anyone who's ever written a screenplay? Grin

My favorite tagline currently being used by a major corp is the one from Monster.com...

"Your calling is calling"

This has popped up all over certain e-mails, but there was a local furniture store in Brunswick, GA where I used to live.  It's name was Sofa King.  Tagline:

"Our prices are Sofa King low'

The sofa king "ad" has been done on several radio stations. I remember the only time the local rock station did that commercial on the air. The dj's could not get through it without laughing.
