As someone that has been in "the trenches" for a long time and used to spend the week leading to the trade deadline working the phones...I will advise any and all of you to not listen to ANY rumors you hear this week.  Please be careful as to the rumors you report as fact.

If you hear a rumor...90% of the time the rumor was never true.  The other 10% of the time it was partially true and it's three months old.

The fact of the matter is that what trades come down they always catch people off guard.  "I didn't see that coming!"

The Red Sox are a good example.  Some of my beloved former colleagues spent the weekend asking me for some help sorting out something they were "positive" Boston was about to pull the trigger on Adrian Gonzalez out of San Diego.  They needed me to use some of my contacts with the Padres to confirm the deal.

Seriously.  Adrian Gonzalez.  The trade, the one they "knew was basically a done deal" was AG coming to Boston for Michael Bowden, Daniel Bard, Lars Anderson and Manny Delcarmen.

Now...let's forget the fact that Boston literally doesn't have a place for AG.  Where the hell would he go?  Let's see.  Youk to 3rd.  Check.  AG to 1st.  Check.  Lowell DH's on Ortiz's day off.  Check.  Adam Laroche will...shit.  What do we do with Adam?  Okay!  Try this again.  Lowell stays at 3rd, AG will DH, Laroche at 1st and Youk plays the outfield...

Riiiiiiiiiiiiight.

Look, I love AG.  But this is exactly why you don't listen to rumors.  Common sense tells you that there is no spot for him (1) and that Boston won't give him up for that high of a price (2).

Boston was also linked to a deal that was going to bring Jack Wilson AND Freddy Sanchez to the Sox.  GREAT!  Last time I checked, however, Boston has a starting 2B that is pretty decent and two short stops.  I could find a place for Wilson.  I would out right release Nick Green, start Wilson and spell Lowell with Lowrie for days off.  But Sanchez is a guy that needs to start every day.

Anyway...my point...don't believe anything you hear this week until it's a done deal.

Do people really needs to be told this? Everyone knows that the fabrication shop in the rumor mill works double shifts this time of year...when I heard the rumor of Adrian to Boston, I laughed hard enough to scare the cat.

Sadly, yes.  You don't remember the 150 threads last year that I had to combine into one?

I'm trying not to listen to this rumor, but apparently the Yankees front office are lining up their ducks to bring Roy Halladay to New York.

Yeah, but does anyone with a fully functioning frontal lobe need to be told this?

Wink

I read on YSports Boston offered the Indians Bucholtz straight up for Victor Martinez and the Tribe declined. That bat would have been huge for the Sox.

"RHP Clay Buchholz was offered to the Cleveland Indians in exchange for C Victor Martinez in one potential deal to acquire the switch-hitting catcher, according to a Sunday report in the Boston Globe, and the Sox also offered RHP Michael Bowden, RHP Justin Masterson and a outfield prospect in a second trade scenario for Martinez - but both were rejected by Tribe execs according to a Globe report quoting a National League scout. Martinez would certainly fill a need with the Red Sox for both a catcher and a power-packed bat in the middle of the lineup, but the catcher is also set to become a free agent after the 2010 season."

PLEASE don't misunderstand!  The rumors are fun.  Last year we had some people (and none of them you) that "reported" some things as fact and it wasn't.  Post the rumors!  Just be sure they are labeled as that...rumor.  I love a good rumor like the next guy.

Why not keep all of them in one thread though, so as not to clutter the board?  Oh wait, we're already doing that.   Wink

Gordon Edes, formerly of the Globe and now writing for Yahoo Sports, has reported that Boston has made an offer to Toronto that is superior to anything they've received thus far:

Clay Buchholz, Michael Bowden and Ryan Westmoreland for Halladay.

If true...Boston is giving up WAY too much.  All three are A+ prospects.  Westmoreland is freaking awesome, he has a lot of scouts that compare him to Grady Sizemore.  Boston might be a machine when it comes to producing pitching and infielders, but they continue to trade away power OF players (Murphy, Moss, etc).

IF this is true I would feel much better about it if Bowden weren't part of the deal.  Buchholz is going to be a legit 1 or 2, Bowden will be a legit 3 or 4.  Add those two guys to the players that the Jays will have coming back next season and that will be a stacked 1-5 for the next 10 years.

On another note..

The Phillies have reached agreement on a trade that would bring them left-hander Cliff Lee and outfielder Ben Francisco from the Indians for Class A right-hander Jason Knapp, Class AAA right-hander Carlos Carrasco, shortstop Jason Donald and catcher Lou Marson, according to major-league sources
