Last night was the culmination, but I wouldn't say ST hasn't been bad for several years!

I disagree. Except for the individual efforts (kicker, punter, Ginn returns), special teams has been abysmal his entire tenure.

It could well be the players. It's said that special teams shows a lot about the quality of depth you have on a team. I'm not sure I buy that, since it seems that many bad teams have (very) good special teams, but maybe.

not sure what this solves here, but there certainly is room for better coaching.

on michael irvin's radio right now he brought up a good point... might want to consider putting in starters on the special teams unit if it truly is a lack of quality talent at the bottom end of the roster.

I think that we've had poor special teams for at least 3 years.  Think of all the talent returning kicks we had with Ginn and how poor it was.  We've been losing the field position battle for a long, long time.

ginn had talent on returns if everything fell all in place... on coverage, it does seem over the past few years that they have not been good. for example, carpenter looked like he was running in quicksand.

interesting that sparano pointed to a lot of turnover at the bottom of the roster at his presser for firing the st coach.

I would have been shocked if he hadn't been fired.  This absolutely had to be done.

Our punter is actually very good, everything else is just godawful. We probably still lose last night with good special teams, but you figure 14 of those points shouldn't have happened, plus give us another 3 for a Field Goal and the score is 27-17. Much more manageable to try and win the game now.

The special teams plays resulted in 21 points, so why are you only subtracting 14?

Something I posted in another thread:

- Come out of the half, and you are up 7-6. The kickoff goes into the endzone, and the guy decides to bring it out. Not only does ST fail to stuff him, they let him return it 103 yds! Pats 13- Fins 7
- Offense fails to get a first down. Punting unit comes out to punt it away. Every fan probably crosses their fingers and says to themselves "I hope we don't let them get a big return". Blocking sucks and the punt is blocked. NE gets the ball in the red zone and scores a TD. Pats 20- Fins 7.
- Fins are able to put a scoring drive together. Pats 20- Fins 14. Now if the ST hadn't just cost them 14 points, the Fins would've had a lead. Instead, the Pats put together another drive and go up 27- 14.
- We're still in this right? Offense drives down field and the Fins go for a long FG. Blocked, and returned for a TD. Pats 34- Fins 14. Hmmmm, Fins are down by 20. ST gave up 21 of the 28 points scored up till then in the second half....
