I thought that was a catch before the half.

It reminded me of the Bert Emanuel play.

Geno Smith sucks.  That is all.

He's pretty bad right now. I can see why teams fell out of love with him and he fell to Rd 2. Still only his 2nd game ever though

Check the replays again.  The ball clearly moved when it hit the ground.  He failed to get his hands under the ball to secure it.   That's an incomplete pass.

Anyone still sad that we got rid of Clyde Gates?

This guy has all the talent, but hands of stone.  He's another Ted Ginn.  You hope you can coach him up, but this is his third year now and he STILL cannot catch.  I can't believe what I saw.

As for the Thompkins TD, the call was right, the ball definitely moved.  However, there's no possible way to make a diving catch like that without the ball at least moving a little bit.  That rule pretty much outlaws any diving catches.  My opinion, a catch like that should be ruled a catch.

The problem was he had both hands on the top side of the ball - nothing under (not even a single finger). Going to the ground with the ball and hands like that means you're trapping the balling with the ground and that's not allowed. IMHO, it should have been called incomplete even if the ball hadn't shifted. Ball movement in itself isn't what isn't allowed. It's using the ground as part of making the catch.

The Patriots could be a solid team at some point this season, but are you kidding me the receivers there suck. I completely understand letting Welker go ($6 million a year is a lot) and with a very similar player in Edelman (at less than $1 million a year)... but, man, they've been unlucky with their receivers and tight ends this (off-)season.

Unfortunately for the Dolphins, the Pats still managed to eke out two wins. And we don't even get to play them until week 8. I expect they'll be a whole lot tougher then.

Great game last night!!!  Geno throws int's, especially at the end when the Jets need to drive into FG range.  TD overturned against the Pats.  Badly missed FG by the Pats.  Brady pi$$ed over balls dropped that hit the receivers in the hands.  A little melee at the end, then Belichek going crazy because the ejected Jets players didn't leave the field for the final 38 seconds of the game.  Possible suspensions coming for Jets players for throwing punches, and the refs being shoved.  The only problem is this will all be blown over by the time the Fins meet either of these teams.

I think Brady acted like a child last night, and should be ashamed of his behavior.  Throwing temper tantrums on the sideline like a 3rd grader that got his candy taken away.  This guy's supposed to be a role model and a leader?  You must be joking.

Brady said he lost his temper and needs to work on that.  But of all the things from the game I shocked that you would pick that one as something to be ashamed of compared to the behavior of several Jets player that did worse.

^^ I expect the Jets to act like scumbags.  They are the Jets.

I expect Brady to act like what the media portrays him as - a poster boy and a model citizen.

I don't get why it was overturned.

The ball did touch the ground but I thought after the Bert Emanuel play that it should still be a catch

The ball is allowed to touch the ground, that wasn't the issue. The problem here is that the ground was used to trap the ball AND the ball shifted. That's going to be called incomplete every time. Notice how his hands are on the top part of the ball. Nothing under or even much on the sides. The refs would have had to rule that he had control with that grip AND maintained control when the ball hit the ground AND didn't use the ground to make the catch.

IMHO, the attempt failed on all three points.

merged.  one game not involving the Dolphins doesn't warrant two threads.

I disagree fyo.  It looked to me like the hands were on the side.  He had clear control prior to hitting the ground.  Had he been 8 feet in the air, I think he'd have had more time to bring it in and secure it.

However, when he hit the ground, the shock from the fall caused the ball to move.  This means he lost control for a split second.  Loss of control + ball hit the ground = incomplete pass.

I don't like the rule, but you have to try to quantify what constitutes making a catch.  By the way the rules are written, it was the correct call.
