I would have been easier to give the player a one game fine for damaging the field of play and causing a disruption in play than punishing others who are enjoying the game and not causing trouble. I hate throwing the baby out with the bathwater solutions.

Bingo.....what a waste of time creating rules for such trivial and meaningless shit.

So, first the discussion was about fans waiting around while they fix goalposts, but now they made a rule for one single guy who did one thing once that caused a problem.

I just don't see this as a top priority topic in the NFL.  Up there with bullying and player safety?  Not really.

I don't see it as a top priority, but I don't see any reason not to pass the rule.  The positive impact of the rule is minimal, but the negative impact is zero.  Resulting in a net (all be it tiny) positive benefit.

The negative impact is the perception of the "No Fun League"

People love TD celebrations.  This is just one type.  Can't use the ball.  Can't celebrate in groups.  Can't dunk on goal posts.  Heaven forbid we should hurt the other guys' feelings.

Just think its overkill, to have so many "celebration" related rules in place.  That's the negative impact.

Obviously.  I'm not an idiot.

You clearly have some hatred for Jimmy Graham which drives your opinion, but this is not a required part of the game that needed to be addressed.

I have NO hatred for Graham. He is the BEST TE in the game today. I hope the Saints can't work out a long-term deal with him and Miami signs him next offseason. But the "show-boating" I hate....from ALL PLAYERS!

And this will blow your lid too Brian. They are going to crack down on "taunting" too it came out this morning

For all you guys who think this took away precious time from anything else, you are mistaken. I would lay a wager more time has been spent debating this rule on this site than it took for it to be proposed and passed by the NFL. Also, considering this "top priority" is also taking things a bit too far.

It was fine until Jimmy Graham ruined it.  Since they can't make a rule that says Jimmy Graham may not dunk on the goalposts, what should they do?  Make it a penalty, but only if the goalpost is bent far enough?

The players have no legitimate reason to be touching the crossbar.  At all.  Ever.  The fact that a single game was delayed because of that is enough reason to stop it.

I fully support a ban on touching the crossbar, and if this is the way they enact it, so be it.

Gee, whiz, thanks for the link.  Read all the comments, seems like most of them agree with me.  I especially like this one:

This may be a bad example but didn't they stop NBA players from hanging on the rim for too long because Shaq decided to break the backboard?

Or Darryl Dawkins

Somehow I think the owners were more interested in one of their top players getting hurt dunking the ball, which would cost them money if a top player can't play.  sprained ankle, injured fingers, wrist, etc.  They don't want their top WR or TE missing playing time, it's always about the money.

NFL Network reporting at the NFL owners meetings this morning they talked about "expanded playoffs" and adding teams. They didn't take a vote to make it happen for this upcoming season. They decide it won't happen this year. But it looks like it is coming soon and probably in 2015.
