I am a firm believer you can't grade a draft until 3 years after it happened.....

Round   Selection   Player   Position   College
1   13   Laremy Tunsil   OT   Ole Miss
2   38   Xavien Howard   CB   Baylor
3   73   Kenyan Drake   RB   Alabama
3   86   Leonte Carroo   WR   Rutgers
6   186   Jakeem Grant   WR   Texas Tech
6   204   Jordan Lucas   CB/S   Penn State
7   223   Brandon Doughty   QB   Western Kentucky
7   231   Thomas Duarte   TE   UCLA

I think you did pretty good.

Nailed the first 3 picks, trading up for Carroo really sucked though.

Getting Grant is the 6th round was a good find too. Really, excellent draft. 6th and 7th round picks are pure lottery tickets so you can't judge them for them unless they turn into something good.

They said during the draft that like 12 or more starters for New England were drafted after round 3. Look at this draft ... which is one of our better ones ... and see how far away we are from that. It looks like Grier got 3 starters (including Rosen) out of this draft. Here's hoping his lower picks show promise as well.

QB   Tom Brady      New England Patriots / 6th / 199th pick / 2000
WR   Julian Edelman      New England Patriots / 7th / 232nd pick / 2009

T   Trent Brown      San Francisco 49ers / 7th / 244th pick / 2015
T   Marcus Cannon      New England Patriots / 5th / 138th pick / 2011

C   David Andrews
RG   Shaq Mason      New England Patriots / 4th / 131st pick / 2015

DE   Trey Flowers      New England Patriots / 4th / 101st pick / 2015

DT   Lawrence Guy      Green Bay Packers / 7th / 233rd pick / 2011

LB   Elandon Roberts      New England Patriots / 6th / 214th pick / 2016

LCB   Jason McCourty      Tennessee Titans / 6th / 203rd pick / 2009

K   Stephen Gostkowski      New England Patriots / 4th / 118th pick / 2006
P   Ryan Allen

I guess that depends if you consider the punter and kicker as starters.

However, the list of starters was anybody with 11 or more starts so it only included 10 each on def and off so you can probably add in two more guys.

How freaking impressive is that? Screw the Super Bowls ... New England is killing the draft and doing it from the back of the pack.

They were starters on one of the worst teams in the league and it's more because we can't draft at the top. We are 3 out of our last 7 for first round drafts.

2011    15    Mike Pouncey    Center    Florida
2012    8    Ryan Tannehill    Quarterback    Texas A&M
2013    3    Dion Jordan    Defensive end    Oregon
2014    19    Ja'Wuan James    Offensive tackle    Tennessee
2015    14    DeVante Parker    Wide receiver    University of Louisville
2016    13    Laremy Tunsil    Tackle    Mississippi    [t]
2017    22    Charles Harris    Defensive end    Missouri
2018    11    Minkah Fitzpatrick    Safety    Alabama

A bad team like us picking higher should really be 100% but we got it right 5 out of the last 8 times not counting this year which should be another hit.

Pouncey, Ryan, James(5 year starter at league average or a bit above), Tunsil and Minkah. Harris can still prove himself with luck but Parker and Jordan were huge misses. Never draft 1st rounders with injury problems.

Pouncey was good but that still is only 4 out of 8. I like Tannehill but he is far from a success story and pretending he was just shows how desperate for success we are. He's really more suited for back-up role than leading a team for a comeback. Tunsil and Fitzpatrick are solid picks and luckily ... they both fell to us. Ja'Wuan James was decent but not a stud by any means. Neither Parker or Harris has shown they are worthy to start on a decent team and Dion Jordon was a complete and utter bust and I believe Parker is headed there too. That means Pouncy, Tunsil, and Fitzpatrick were good picks and James was a decent one.

First round talents should always contribute and we aren't even close.

I don't think it's that impressive.  Three of the players were drafted by other teams, punter and kicker really don't count because those players should never be drafted in the top three rounds.  I give them credit for hitting on two players in 2011 and two players in 2015; other than that I'll bet most teams have several players drafted after round three over a seven year period.

You give credit for hitting in 2011 and 2015 but NOT 2000?  Really?  That guy is pretty good too.

Actually I consider Trent Brown's benefit to the Patriots to be a greater hit than say Amendola for the Dolphins.  Patriots paid less in draft capital to squire him than they will get back in compensatory pick and cash wise they paid him rookie contract money.  On the hand, Dolphins paid Amendola FA money.  What I think the Patriots do a bit better is not the total number of low draft pick starters as much as low cost starters, either late picks, UDFA or other teams cast offs as opposed to paying big cash in FA to squire talent. I recall BB mentioning he considers the salary cap to be more to a limit than the number of draft picks.  e.g. If he was given the choice of extra picks or extra salary cap space he would prefer the cap space.

He's okay, I guess. lol  I figured that went without saying; but you have to admit that was pure luck, otherwise he would have been drafted much earlier.

yes and no.  BB wanted to draft him earlier but he didn’t have final say of the 2000 draft.  Him being right and everyone else being wrong was a huge factor in him having final say in later drafts.

I don’t know what the results would be cause I haven’t looked it up....but I would say a good objective measure of how successful a team is with the first round would be if the team picked up the 5th year option or not.
