^ I would think that someone flying a Desanctimonius flag would be Pro-Trump and anti-Desantis.

But maybe it's how Trumpers started self-identifying as Deplorables after the Hillary quote.

That's kind of how I took it but who knows? Right now it looks more like people trying to profit than an actual movement of sorts as outside of Fau posting I haven't seen any being worn.

I have a political prediction.

I think that the GOP biggest political area of weakness right now is on Medicare and SS.  They know that it is unpopular, so they don't want to address it (which I get).  So, Biden brought it up in the SoU speech and got booed for it.  Meanwhile, Rick Scott and Mike Lee (who was very offended by the idea) are on video talking about it.  Rick Scott had it as part of the platform.

So, I don't think that the GOP as a party wants to put SS and Medicare on the table.  But, at the same time, some of their key members (even after the SoU) keep bringing it up.  So, it's a very VERY tough road for them to navigate.

Ron Desantis has a bit of a sketchy voting record when it comes to this, as well, but he's been able to keep himself out of the converstaion.

Enter Trump.

A "normal republican" most likely wouldn't try to label Desantis as one that is trying to take down SS and Medicare, because it would drag down the entire party for re-election across the country.  It would legitimize the Biden comments at the SoU.  But Trump doesn't care about party loyalty and he doesn't have a political ideology.

I can absolutely see Trump trying to paint Desantis as someone trying to cut those programs.  That seems like the most logical path to beating Desantis in a primary (over this pedo allegation stuff), but also I think that it could stick to Desantis in the general election, even if he won.

Oh, and Trump has a new nickname for him: Meatball Ron.    I don't know what it means, but I like it better than his other one.  It made me laugh.

Trump being petty enough to crash the entire GOP would in a weird way somewhat redeem him.

The best thing would be if he loses and mounts an independent run basically handing the election ( and maybe even congress ) to the democrats.

Meatball Ron is funny though have to admit.

Most Republicans don't want to scrap them. We want it to be optional and have it overseen differently so funds cannot be used for other things. There are alos some changes that could benefit people who are on them. I haven't seen anything from DeSantis say any different.

Rick Scott is kind of an outlier when it comes to SS and Medicare and easy for the Democrats to use against the whole party even though it isn't true. If there were a better option running for Senate then Scott wouldn't be there today as he doesn't have very many fans.

Most Republicans don’t agree with Sen. Rick Scott‘s plan to sunset programs including Medicare and Social Security, Sen. Mike Rounds said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union,” even as he left the door open to other changes.

“The vast majority of us would say that we prefer to look at it in a different direction, one of managing it, as opposed to a discussion about having everything start over again,” Rounds said.

.... and I don't get the Meatball Ron name but Trump is desperately reaching for something to stick while he is losing more and more support. Apparently he is comparinng Ron's stature to a meatball. He also reportedly now calls him 'Shutdown Ron' over his  brief economic and social lockdown during the pandemic. He's so very desperate and Ron wins by not even acknowledging it.

I think it's funny that now that Republicans are turning their backs on Trump that he is finally "leading" in tha polls. It's almst as if he has the support of the MSM media now ... hahaha

Honestly CF I’m kinda in support of SS reforms. I think it should be there for those who are on it and those with disabilities but for the most part SS is a wealth transfer from the working to well to do retireees.

Anyone under 45 should be allowed to get what they’ve put into the system. I know myself and most of my peers could invest that money much better than the government.

However it is hard to trust republicans that they just won’t gut it and leave people on the streets who do actually need ut.

That's just propaganda they want you to believe. In reaity the biggest change would be for people like you and I to invest our own money instead of forcing us to the gov do it for us.

Yeah I agree. It is basically a Ponzi scheme and the amount you get from it is a joke. I know I could drastically improve my life and set myself up nicely and probably retire with some quality of life a lot sooner.

That said my best friend is on disability and it would be horrible if she got kicked off.

I'm in support of SS reforms, too.  I totally think that revamping how we pay for it is a conversation worth having.

But that is not a stance that is viable politically, unfortunately.  It will cost you an election if you run on it.

Just saw this on a conservative board and I think it really rings true as far as Trump is concerned.  It "namecalling" worked with Jeb because nobody liked him. Ron is in a different category, this won't work and makes Trump look petty.
I swear it's hard to find Republicans who are still supporting him.

I am getting whiplash in my life around Trump/Desantis, depending on who I talk to.

Trump is still polling above Desantis by a pretty good margin, within GOP voters.  But I have fallen back on "wait and see".  Desantis hasn't been tested.  And I think Trump could implode.  But if he doesn't and Desantis just sits there and gets called a pedo for 6 months, it might be bad.

I don't even know anymore.

This is just anecdotal, but the Trump weirdos are still out, here in S. Florida.  They have big trucks and flags and park on the side of the overpass on I-95 so you have to drive under their parade on the way home from work every day.  They used to have Desantis flags, too.  Now they do not.

...and my neighbor that I mentioned before that has the flags.

Ultimately, I don't think we will get to a point where whichever side loses doesn't fall in line with the eventual winner.

And Trump running as 3rd party is a Democrat's pipe-dream....that ain't happenin.

^^^  Monmouth University poll released on Thursday indicates if the 2024 election were held today and just between the two, DeSantis would come out on top.

DeSantis captured 53 percent of the vote from Republican respondents in a hypothetical head-to-head primary race, while Trump netted just 40 percent. The poll was taken January 26 through February 2.

Unfortunately others being in the race will most likely only pull DeSantis votes

If it becomes apparent that Trump is going to win in an crowded field do they all drop out except for one like the democrats did to Sanders?

It's funny but we have that too constantly in Central Florida but they have gone from Trump signs to Brandon, Ultra Maga (which is avreference to being slammed) and Patriot Country type signs. They look similar but no Trump in the name. The guy who lead it is very popular around town because of his paintings which hang around the local towns. They even invade Disney at times and has made national news. I just looked and the '"Paint the Trump" site appears to be gone and that's where they would post all of these weekly outings. I can now only find them on his personal page and like I said "Trump" seems to be gone. I wonder if Jeff is now supporting DeSantis or waiting for things to fall into line?
