If your neighbor says, "I'm going to the city this weekend," what city are they talking about, and how far is it from you?

For me, the answer is San Francisco, which is about 45 miles away.

No one around here uses that term. I guess the closest thing is for them to say downtown which means Orlando but it also means a very specific area of Orlando, the arena and soccer stadium doesn't fall into that discussion. It may be about 20 minutes.

We say we are going into "town" because we live about 10 minutes outside of town in the country.  Like Phish said ... if we are doing something in Orlando we typically refer to the area we are going ... downtown, Downtown Disney, CityWalk, I - Drive  or the specific place we are headed like Bass Pro Shop, Ole Red, Millenia Mall etc..

I don't think that's terminology that's used here because we're pretty near three metro areas.  West Palm, Ft. Laud, Miami

I would assume if someone said that, they were going to Miami, but I would definitely ask what they meant.

They don't use "The City," but people in N. AZ use "going down to The Valley" to refer to a trip to Phoenix.

So "going into town this weekend" would mean Orlando?

No. Orlando is designated by the area or place we would be going to. Going into town would be either Mount Dora or Eustis ... both of which are roughly 10 minutes away. Nothing but land, houses and farms between there or a random Circle K.

Just as some more backstory, if someone were to say they are going to "the town" (not "into town," but to "the town") this weekend, where I live, it would almost certainly mean Oakland.  If you get about 20 miles farther east, it probably still means Oakland, but it might mean Sacramento.

For reference:

The city for me is Adelaide (in South Australia).

I'm about 10Km (so around 6 miles) from the CBD.

For me it would be New York City, which is about 175 miles away.
