Jeff Okudah was infamously drafted by the Lions 3rd overall in 2020. Their stupidity of not trading the pick or drafting a QB allowed us to draft Tua and the Chargers to draft Herbert.

One of the more consequential draft busts in recent history, it basically rebooted the Lions franchise, gave the Chargers a franchise QB and possibly gave us a Top 5 QB as well.

It's fair to criticize the Lions for a failed pick, but they weren't drafting a QB in 2020 regardless; Stafford was still on the team.  It's like criticizing the Seahawks or Texans for not drafting Jalen Hurts in 2020.

The main issue for me was that they were picking 3rd, which means they sucked. So, lots of holes on the team. Stafford was traded the following season but asusming they had no idea they would do that, they were not one player away anyway. Like the Falcons in 2021 when they selected Pitts, they should've auctioned off the pick and gotten a very good return.

Bad teams can ill afford to waste #3 overall picks.

MIA and LAC knew that DET and NYG weren't picking a QB, so there was no leverage there.
Tua and Herbert had enough questions that no other teams were talking about burning draft capital to jump up and get them.  Hell, even the Dolphins and Chargers were happy to sit still.
So it is understandable that DET and NYG went with best-player-available.
