THE ASSCLOWN AWARD

« on: November 12, 2023, 04:49:49 pm »

This is from the Lions-Chargers game today.

It's 10-3 you have fourth and goal at the one.

Why wouldn't you kick the almost guaranteed field goal and make it a two score game, instead of giving your opponent a chance to gain momentum?

I also disagreed with their decision when they faced the same situation on their next drive.

That time they scored the TD.

If they had kicked the field goal and it was 13-3, I would say go for it then.  The key thought is the number of scores.

It would be more insightful if you posted these kind of comments either:

a) before the outcome is known, or
b) when the choice happened to work out, but you think it was statistically a bad decision (with your evidence)

Anyone can just sit on their couch and ask, "Why did you do the thing that didn't work?"
That is not meaningful analysis.

I never give coaches crap for going for it.  Even if you don't get it, the other team has to operate from the 1.  Get a yard....win the game.

Teams that can't get a yard aren't good enough to win the Super Bowl anyway.  Go win games.  Or don't.  But don't just elongate games to lose later.

I dare say every Super Bowl champion has been stopped in a one yard situation at some point during the season.

Absolutely.  But don't look at "going for it from the 1" in a microscope.  If you go and get it regularly, you're gonna be good.  If you go and regularly can't get the yard, you're not good, so who gives a shit?  One trip to the endzone in the grand scheme of a season doesn't matter.

Play to be the better team.   And if you are, great.

and if you come up with a way to constantly get the "and 1" situations, people call you a cheater and want to outlaw your strategy.
