Agreed.   A lot of athletes come from poor backgrounds and don't know how to manage money like this.  They also tend to attract new "friends" when they come into this kind of money and very few of those friends will have their best interests at heart.

Lots of people are now signing long term contracts that will look crazy in years to come too. Bobby is still getting paid by the Orioles as well. Crazy good for him. This is just a small list of professional athletes who have done that ...

-Shohei Ohtani: He deferred an unprecedented $680 million of his $700 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
-Freddie Freeman (Los Angeles Dodgers): Deferred $57 million of his $162 million contract, payable through 2046
-Ken Griffey Jr.: He received deferred payments from the Cincinnati Reds that finally ended in 2024.
-Chris Davis: The Baltimore Orioles deferred roughly $40 million of his contract to be paid out through 2037.
-Manny Ramirez: He is receiving $2 million annually from the Boston Red Sox in a deal ending in 2026.
-Max Scherzer: The Washington Nationals deferred $105 million of his salary, paying him through 2028 .
-Bret Saberhagen: The Mets used a similar $250,000 annual deferral for Saberhagen, which actually inspired Bonilla's deal.Freddie Freeman: His current Dodgers contract includes a deferred $4 million annual payout stretching from 2028 to 2040.
