I just launched a forum. It's geared toward allowing family to share current events and pictures easily. I also want to attract other lost relatives from around the world to generate an indepth geneology over time.

Any technical, graphic or content suggestions?

I think if you took all that open green space in the top header bar and fitted it with a window to run 24/7 streaming hardcore porn, or professional midget tossing, I know I'd spend more time on the site...

On the serious side, my thoughts on the visuals...

* I'd probably take a graphic of one of the less intricate Celtic knots, and run it left of the kilmurry.net text.
* If you have the flexibility, take a smaller version (or another graphic of an even simpler round knot) and use those for the topic bullet graphics (currently the little green apples).
* Take the text for your top global nav bar and either make it a little larger or use a bolder font. As it is, it disappears a little.
* Add some other colors to the page, preferably black or a darker color, to set off the green. I love green too, but right now the color fade you're using could only be described as "pistachio muzak." Ask Ebon for 30 seconds of his time and he'll cure all your color ills...

I think doing some of those things would make your forum pop the eyes a little bit more...but I like the idea...nice concept for a family communication center.

Edited to add: I like this picture below as a modern way of representing the celtic grid knotwork of the old days...

Just curious, because I know you dig the whole rennaissance scene...have you ever learned how to set up a grid and weave a celtic knot? It's actually a pretty cool process. I don't have quite the amount of Irish running through me as ANYONE with the name of Kilmurry likely has, but I always thought it would be cool to try this, just as a way of touchin' my ancestry.

Are you using the same software... phpbb? If so, I can give you some pointers that would have saved me alot of time. Especially if your going to install the attachment mod that allows users to upload pictures to be imbedded into the posts.

And if you need a place to host it, I got tons of room on our server. No charge.

I am using phpBB, I hadn't thought much about having people post pics...  I'm not just doing a forum, I'm doing a whole site dedicated to keeping extended family in touch with each other.

The forum is online already, but the main site hasn't been launched yet since I'm still working on building it.

Nothing like getting those three off the to-do list early on in the day, don'tcha think? ...leaves you more time in the afternoon to surf porn sites.

All depends on how dextrous you are, and I suppose how pattern-oriented as well. Type "Celtic Knot Grid" in google or whatever you search with and I'll bet you find expert instruction. I also think the Renfest has an artisan set up in a little booth that ties the knots and makes women's hair accessory stuff with it...if you happen to be walking around Renfest this year. I know he's been there the last two years anyway.
