Uh oh! Another fishtank thread...

I've lost 3 fish in 4 days. My betta, and 2 grouamis (I only had those 2 of that particular breed.) The betta and the first grouami appeared to have just died. The second grouami got slaughtered. My tank is clean, and I've been doing the same thing I've always done, and never lost a fish other than bringing a weak one home from the fish store. None of those fish looked sick at all the day before. I just came home from work, and they were dead.

Any theories?

Did you test the Ammonia,and Nitrites?

When you checked your ammonia level,did you take your water temp, in account?

Were they eating before they died?

What do you mean slaughtered?

open wounds,scales missing,stuff like that?

How long have you had them?

Didn't you just move this tank in the past week or so?

I havent checked the ammonia and nitrates. I need to get a new test today. But, I am pretty sure that they are ok.

The temperature is at about 78 degrees

The grouami's tail was ripped to shreds and he was missing an eye.

I've had the betta for about a year, and the 2 grouamis about 2 months.

Yes, I just moved the tank.

Whoaaa...not the Nitrates...The nitrites....

Nitrates are relitively harmless...unless they are very high for a long periods....

Nitrites are are the second phase of the nitrogen cycle...they are less toxic,but still poisonous......

Ammonia absorbed by nitrofying bacteria (Biological filter) converting it to---> Nitrites...which absorbed/converted to ----> Nitrates relatively harmless...

It sounds alot like the stress of the move of the tank,as the cause of death.......The missing eye could be post mortem...I think the move may have thrown off the balance in  biological filter.

(Unless you've got high ammonia,or nitrites....)

Hard water was the culprit. When I bought more test strips, I asked a guy at Pet Smart and he told me to be careful when doing water changes here, as the PH of tap water changes frequently. Seeing as I'm on the coast now, this may wind up being a problem with down there in Florida too. Also, he said to add slightly more water conditioner and salt than the box calls for. He recommended a new water conditioner too. Aqua Safe. I did a 50% water change, and added the amounts as printed on the bottle.

So far, all I've lost was the betta and 2 grouamis. One other grouami isnt doing very well, but hopefully with the problem corrected, he'll be ok. My angelfish are fine.

In any coastal area, hard water can be a major problem, particularly if your water comes from a well.
