Capcom Bracket:

Diablo (1996, PC)
Blizzard

This hack and slash action-adventure followed the typical role playing conventions, where different character classes had different strengths.  Unlike many dungeon crawler games, though, “Diablo” was set in real-time, rather than turn based, and had unmatched graphics for its time.  An added feature to “Diablo” was that levels were randomly generated, with monsters and items also dropped randomly.  This gave the game an added level of replayability, pushing it to an elite status.

VS.

Metroid: Prime (2002, GC)
Retro Studios

Nintendo took a big risk in choosing to take their franchise adventure series into first-person on the GameCube.  Critics questioned how Metroid would work as a shooter, but after playing the game, their questions were answered.  Metroid, despite the change in perspective, stayed true to its form, and remained an adventure game, not a shooter, all but creating the “first person adventure” genre.  All of the things that fans loved about the 2D games still existed, but in a way they’d never seen before.  It received incredible scores from critics, including a perfect 10 from EGM Magazine.

Metroid,  one of the best series ever.  Great transition to first person by Retro.  Tip of the cap by me.

I played through and beat Metroid Prime (and since I'm not a huge fan of Diablo-type games...not so much Diablo), it got my vote.  I think that parts of the MP were revolutionary, and loved how they incorporated 3rd person elements into it (like the morrph ball scenes and stuff).  However, when the game was done, I was glad, and had no desire to see the series go further in that direction.  ...I never played the sequel.

I thought that there was a missed opportunity to use more 3rd person stuff...not just more morph ball stuff, but more segments in general that pulled back the camera, like is done in driving scenes in Halo.

diablo was HUGE .. absolutely ginormous .. diablo II (the sequel) was even bigger and better .. but for old times sake .. when diablo came out it was top of the line ..

blizzard has always put out some pretty fantastic games .. from diablo to starcraft ( a game i hope is on the 64 bracket) to warcraft 2.. they make quality.

Diablo. For Fau's reasons...Not to mention, both 1 and 2 had me on the edge of my seat until it was over.

Diablo doesn't make it out of round one? This contest is "obviously" a farce...  Roll Eyes

I was blaming them...

I've never even heard of Metroid Prime before this board contest...and it beats out the most original game ever created for the PC. It would be like Jethro Tull beating out Metallica for the best heavy metal Grammy.

oh wait...

why do you only allow for a tie breaker?  It would seem more fair to just extend the voting by another day or so...
