I thought this deserved its own thread now that NFL.com has confirmed it.

Evidence?  The NFL.com Predict the Pick page (it has since been changed to the previous logo):

Discuss.

I think it's more or less been discussed already as a bad logo with some saying the changes are all right or acceptable. I don't mind the abstract look to it, I kind of wanted the original shape or even the earlier logo with the red eyes or whatever that was.

I reserve judgment until I see the uniform makeover.

I also would reserve saying that anything is "official" until the TEAM announces it.

I will not polish this turd.  This logo sucks.

Steven Ross and our marketing team is full of idiots.  You can't talk about how "we've listened to the fans" and revert from the orange carpet, the forced Fins-Up fight song, and the club in the stadium to show that you finally get us, and then give us this turd of a logo that everyone hates.

Did they focus test it at all?  Or did they just ask Bob Griese?

^^ they can't have focus groups without it leaking.  Of course, as close they tried to play it, it still got out months too early.

I guess the real question is - why does it need to be such a secret?

So NFL.com can have at least 24 hours in which they can sell the authentic jersey's before the cheap knockoffs hit the street.

Sure they can.  Get people in a room and show it to them.  Or better yet, show them 20 different versions and let them comment on each of them.

Dave is correct. That's exactly how it works or is supposed to work.  I think Dave's comment hits home. Everytime I see it I'll think of a turd. The only thing worse is how bad they kept it a secret.

^^^ or you can leak 5 of them.... then check the various fan websites and go with the one with the most positive/least negative comments and call that your focus group.

Leaking is a good way to get additional press coverage as well.

1) You get a news story about the leak.

2) Then a story about the denial.

3) Then a half dozen about the speculation.

4) and then final a story about the formal announcement.

If you don't leak it you only get the formal announcement.

I would bet money that the team did actually pass it through focus groups, and since they would want to keep it a secret, I'd bet the "show them a group of different logos and get feedback on all of them" was likely the method used.

I think your reaction is natural... When an artistic change is made to something you have an emotional investment in (like an NFL team), and you don't approve of that change, the disapproval you show will be magnified, due to the emotional base involved.

I think everyone should wear their gear inside out at the first game in protest

Yes, so when they show any crowd shots, TV viewers from around the country can think that people in South Florida don't know how to dress themselves. Wink

I think the league counts as an "official" source.

Mike Dee (who could be a complete liar, who knows) told ME personally that they had only shown the logo to some old players, like Griese.

I want to be clear -- I think that a fan group voting on a logo or name is a bad idea.  Fans want what they already know.  They aren't designers and they don't understand branding.  And certain logos might piss people off temporarily, but they serve a greater function (like the Miami Marlins logo) -- new stadium, new style, new target, new branding.  That logo change made sense, even if you didn't like it.

This logo does not.  It is boring and generic.  It doesn't pay tribute to the past or look to the future.  It looks amateurish.  It says nothing about your team identity.  It is not accompanied by a change in thinking either.  And of all teams, the Dolphins have such distrust from their fanbase over the last 2 years with all of gimmicky shit that backfired on them, I'm baffled that they would be so stupid as to make a decision like this.

I am not a traditionalist either, that always wants the old thing.  I think that a change was fine -- but if you're going to do something everyone hates, at least re-brand.  I am hoping that 3 things happen -- 1) I get used to it, 2) I trick myself into liking it because of my love for the team, and 3) it looks better in practice with the greater uniform change than on its own.

PS - I really hate the new sun portion of the logo.

Suggestion:  Buy up any old logo merchandise when your local stores put them on clearance.  When the pats changed logos I bought one hat for dirt cheap.  I should have bought more and saved them to sell later.
