The Boston Marathon was struck by tragedy today as bombs exploded near the finish line.  Heavy casualties were reported.

To all of you in MA, go to Mass General Hospital and donate blood if you can starting at 7 am.  Sad Cry

Every Sunday for the past 3-4 months I have seen a group of about 50 people training for the marathon as a group, they run to raise money for cancer.

Boston Globe is now reporting that the Red Cross has already received more blood donation since the attack that they don't need anymore.

As an avid runner today has been rough for me. This is kind of our Superbowl. It's a huge deal.

I was following a few of my runner friends throughout the race and Twitter was going crazy with updates. The tone went from bubbly excitement to flat out panic.

Over half of the employees at the running store I work at are up in Boston. We also host all of the Team in Training runs in the area, etc. I know a shitload of people up in Boston today. Some spectating. Others running. So far, everyone has been accounted for.

Just a rough, shitty day all the way around.

I'm glad your friends and associates are OK Buddha. The local news had mentioned there were several hundred people from FL there today. I wondered if you knew anyone.

The whole thing sucks, Phish and I'm pretty sure this is going to change road racing. Sad day for distance running.

To Hoodie:  That is awesome and it shows how awesome MA is and makes me proud to live there.

To Buddha: Yes it is awful.  My cousin actually was hit with shrapnel waiting for his wife to finish, but luckily he was not injured.

My prayers go out to the victims and their families, as well as the federal agents to do a good job tracking down who is responsible for this senseless act.

Dolphins, I'm glad your cousin is ok.
I'm still sick to my stomach over this. I hope they find the assholes that did this.

I really don't want to click the link. Can someone offer an overview (which should fall under policy)?
