Everspace 2 is an RPG open world looter/shooter game set in futuristic space made by Rockfish games. It's a sequel to the indie hit Everspace that came out in 2017 on the pc and was later ported to most of the consoles.

Basically Rockfish has taken everything that was good/great about Everspace and made it better. It took me a little while to warm up to the game because it does play a bit different then it's predecessor especially at first but once I got into it, it blew me away. They really have a gem of a game in the making and it's not just potential at this point, it's already realized in a lot of ways. I think they are shooting for a full release in 12 to 18 months but if they wanted they could get this released in 6 months no problem in my opinion. They are either just giving themselves some buffer time to make sure they leave nothing to chance or they are ahead of schedule. The game mechanics are already nearly perfect. There are a few things that are not yet in the game but they are obviously already working on that stuff because what's in the game works great. I think most of the work is just going to be finishing the single player campaign and fleshing out all of the other systems. I think there are going to be 8 systems in the final release and I've spent the whole time in one system so far. My understanding is that the release campaign will only take you through 2 of the systems all the other systems will just be there for you to explore at your own pace. There's still a few tweaks here and there that are needed to the gameplay but not much. Some of the better parts of the game are a little bit hidden at first, but the more you play the more things come together and the game really starts to shine. With a little work those things will come together and be even more readily apparent by the full release. I've played about 18 hours of the early access and I'm just scratching the surface of what's offered. I'm not sure what the top level is going to be I'm only level 10 at this point. I think the Early Access tops out at level 14 so maybe 30 or so for the final release? I think they said they were shooting for like 25 to 30 hours of content, but that's got to be just for the single player campaign itself, there's another 50 hours in exploring the other systems unless they are just tiny by comparison and I can't see that being the case.

The early access costs $39 and you can get it on Steam or GoG. I've seen some people say that's too expense for an early access game, but I tend to disagree. Remember if you pay that $39 now then you won't have to pay anything more at release and that's going to be a steal for this game come release. I bet they raise the price at release to $49 or more because it's going to be worth that much. This game in no way feels like an indie game this is a game that any of the major publishers would be proud to charge $60. It's already better then most space shooter types of games that I have played. Now maybe it's not worth $39 to you as is but you can't look at it that way because if you pay that price your getting the full game and your getting to play it before release and your going to be able to give feedback and help make the game the best it can be. I don't see how that's not worth $39 if you are interested in the game. Now if you're not interested in the game then yeah $39 is a bit much to sink into a game you just want to try out but that's not really who the early release is for. This is for the person who thinks this is a game they would enjoy. This is not some half finished game they are still trying to develop and just want you to help them with development costs, they already did a kickstarter for this game. This is a mostly finished game where they are just wrapping up the finishing touches. In the 18 hours I've played I have yet to run into a single bug. I have heard some people say they've run into some issues but nothing major at this point nothing that would make me think the game is going to be any less polished then the previous game which was nearly flawless. They've even learned a few things from mistakes they made in the first game like not trying to make this a VR game. That just adds a dimension to the game that's not needed and if you're going to do that you have to design the game to be a VR game from the beginning and they realized that which is why they are not doing that. This is a triple A development team. They know what they are doing. They have a vision and they are making it happen, they are not just floundering around. I could not be more impressed with them. I'll say it again this development team reminds me of Blizzard when they first burst onto the scene. We could be looking at the next great development studio and I'm not kidding. Everspace impressed me tremendously and this game is exactly what Blizzard is famous for, taking a good game and making it better. Rockfish games have done that. Maybe they've caught lightning in a bottle with Everspace, but it sure doesn't feel that way, it feels like this is the beginning of something special.

Rather than go into a lot of details about the gameplay itself I'll just leave you with a video where someone has already done that. A video is worth a thousand words.

Yes and no. Imagine if instead of a human in Borderlands you were instead a space ship. So instead of guns you hold in your hand you have weapons mounted to your ship. Instead of wearing shields, you have armor and shields on your ship. Instead of walking or getting in a vehicle your ship has boosters. Now imagine that all the enemies are also space ships and instead of roaming around the planet you roam among the stars. Now you have Everspace.

Yeah in the same way that Star Wars is a more action-y 2001 A space odyssey. Smiley

Yeah, I get it.

Borderlands (which I was kinda referring to in the structure of it) was a game that I enjoyed more after I "beat it".  The story was fine.  But once the was out of the way and you were just doing random stuff, it was more freeing.

This is for you then. The way that Everspace 2 is handling that is the campaign will take you through the first 2 of what I'm calling systems. The full game is going to have I believe 8 systems. Essentially a system is a grouping of a bunch of distinct locations on a map. One location might be a mining outpost, another might be an outlaw base, you get the idea. It's not quite yet clear whether that's just for the early access or for the full release but I think you will have at least some systems that will be there for you to explore as you please. So there's going to be plenty of that freeing stuff, might even spend more time doing that then you will in the campaign. Even the 2 systems in the campaign still have random encounters. The way this is done is that to get from 1 location to another you enter a sort of hyperspace and there's a short travel through hyperspace (like maybe 5 to 15 seconds depending upon how far it is) but during that travel time random locations can pop up and you can choose to go to those random locations rather then continuing to your original destination. These locations will be randomly generated with usually a single objective like kill the enemy presence there or find a special hidden container or protect a freighter from bandits for example. It's totally up to you whether you do these or not but doing them will give you additional loot and experience making the campaign easier and making it last longer.

I've been having an absolute blast playing Everspace 2 Early Access and I have to share some of what I've been doing with you. I would love to capture my gameplay in a video and share it with you, but unfortunately I don't have any software to do that and even if I did it would probably take me months to get to the point of knowing it well enough to actually put together a decent video clip for you. So I'm going to do the next best thing and let you watch a video that someone else did and simply point out some stuff. Before I do that I'd like to explain what it is that you are watching. This is from a recent live stream that Rockfish did showcasing the latest build of the game. I'd just like to mention that I absolutely love Rockfish's community ambassador Erich who's doing the streaming. I've watched him do a bunch of stuff now and he's amazing. Not only does he do a terrific job of answering questions and explaining stuff etc, but he's actually pretty funny as well. He's not at all annoying to me which about 75% of the streamers I've seen are.

So starting at about 1:09 of the below video he's actually talking about one of the game options which is the inertial dampeners. As you are all aware objects in space tend to move in the same direction unless something counters that motion so spaceships tend to drift. Well in Everspace 2 to counter that drift your ship has something called inertial dampeners that automatically fire in the opposite direction you are moving when you stop thrusting in that direction which counteracts that movement and you don't drift as much which makes moving about much more controlled. I know crazy right that they actually put all of this into a video game (you can actually see the dampeners firing on his ship if you know what to look for, they are next to the cockpit). Anyway just as the scene opens he's just disabled the dampeners because some people actually like to play these space shooters more like a real space sim so he shows that option and it's pretty realistic. But none of that is what I wanted to show you I just thought it was a neat segway into the next part.

So just after he demonstrates that a bit he gets into some of the best dogfight action that you will EVER see in a video game. I mean EVER. Not so far, but EVER. Just watching the next couple of minutes he uses just about every trick you have at your disposal in this game to keep from being destroyed and trust me that just about anyone but this guy would have been toast because along with being a great community ambassador he's actually pretty darn good at the game.

So let me explain a few things that are easy to miss. First thing you'll hear him say is that he's going to take out the detonator drone. In the video you'll hear it pinging as it's getting closer and closer. When it gets close enough it detonates and it does nasty damage so he takes it out first. Then you'll hear him mention the Webber Drones. What Webber drones do is they capture your ship in something like a tractor beam. In the game you'll see a purple glow around his cockpick when he's caught. That's really nasty too because it keeps you from being able to move around much and once you play this game a bit you'll realize that if you aren't constantly dodging incoming fire, you're a sitting duck and will be blasted to bits in no time. So to counter the webber drones he has a device that allows him to teleport a short distance and it effectively breaks the tractor beam and allows for free movement again. If you watch closely he suddenly seems to jump from one point to another, that's not a glitch he just used his teleport ability. Well there are several of these webber drones and after he escapes one using his teleport, another one grabs him and luckily the cooldown on his teleport ability is over and he uses it again, but then another webber drone hits his ship a 3rd time and his teleport ability is still on cooldown so he can't escape it using teleport and so has to utilize his other device which allows him to do a full booster burn for about 3 seconds which again leaves the webber drones in his wake. It's about this time that he realizes that all these webber drones are going to make quick work of him if he doesn't do something so what he does next is really cool. If you watch closely he drops 2 sticky turrets on a nearby asteroid. Sticky turrets are just what the name implies little turrets that will stick onto surfaces. What the sticky turrets do then is start to fire at the webber drones and other things chasing him which gets their attention, in the meantime since he's no longer getting the attention of the drones, he quickly takes out several of them with his weapons along with the sticky turrets. If you watch carefully you can see that the turrets are taking most of the incoming fire which allows him time to take out a couple of enemies. Even after he cleans up all the incoming bogeys he realizes that something is still firing at his sticky turrets and he realizes that he's next to an installation with it's own turrets and he takes those out next.. It's an absolutely terrific sequence of events that showcases everything that's so terrific about Everspace 2. My adrenal starts pumping just watching this sequence of events.

One final thing that I would like to mention and that is the graphics in this game are stunning and this video doesn't do them justice because of it's size. You can blow it up to full screen but when you do that it looks pretty pixelated. I can tell you there is absolutely NO pixelation when you are playing the game and it runs as smooth as glass. The effects in this game are terrific. You can see the sunlight coming in from behind as he first comes into the area. You can also see some space debris floating around in space. You can see the beams of light as they hit you and then go behind a small asteroid, etc. It's simply amazing just watching the game. I can't believe the graphics engine these guys built. This is all on top of all the enemy ships trying to kill you. Not only does it do all this stuff but it does it so well, I can't think of anytime where I see even a stutter and there are times where there's like 20 different spaceships being rendered at once. It's breathtaking. This game is amazing and you should all check it out. I haven't had this much fun in years playing a video game. I've already put about 60 hours into the game in the last 15 days or so and it's only early access.
