Onto the 18th Pick

The more I look at it, the more likely it seems that we are going to trade up a few spots from 18th and get someone we really want. This is a very good draft for our positions of need so we should have our pick. I just don't see us making any drafts before draft day because we don't know how things will shake out. If we are "forced" to take Sewell, then I think we move up for a WR. If we get Pitts/Chase at 6, then we trade up for Micah Parsons or Kwity Pae.

We can stay at 18 and still get an excellent player but we got the draft capital to hit 2 homeruns in the same round. Why risk it?

I'm more positive about Miami's O-Line that most people, I don't see them drafting an O-line player until later rounds, unless Sewell is available at 6.  For the 18th I'd like to see them take a defensive player, LB or DT.  Their pick at 35 is going to be a first round talent, I'd like to see them take a RB with that pick.

I don't watch college football a lot so I'm not as familiar with the players as some of you, especially the Hurricanes players. But, the scouting reports on Jaelan Phillips are all basically "Best defensive player in the draft, wants to be a rapper more than a football player. Also, quit football once due to injuries."

Why the hell would we draft someone like that? He has bust written all over him. I don't care about his talent, lots of guys have talent but can't produce in this league. We just traded for and released one in Isaiah Wilson. Stay the hell away from this guy at 18, if we keep the pick.

Some interesting musings from La Canfora who I consider to be one of the more reliable contributors to CBS (and previously the NFL website). He reckons Ja'Marr Chase will be there at #6 for us, and we will pull the trigger to get Najee Harris at #18. Tua will be a very happy QB if that's true...

Same here, if only because you don't move up and sacrifice the picks they did for a guy that would've been there at at leats 7 or 8. They could've only burned one 1st rounder and maybe a 3rd to move up a few spots. I feel it will be Trey Lance.

Bengals need protection for Burrow more than another receiver so the logical pick is Sewell. I think it comes down to how much Burrow is trying to get Chase and if management will listen to him.

With our draft capital, as long as we get the player we want at 6, I am fine with trading up to get the 2nd Top 10 guy. Should only cost us a 2nd rounder, maybe throw in a 4th or 5th to get it done. This allows us to still draft one of the Top 2 Centers. To me, the rebuild is way over and at 10-6, the next step is Superbowl. I don't want any projects in Rounds 1-3, no medical histories, just go get the best players and become a powerhouse.

I agree with this thinking up to a point. You have to be careful. You can't get into win now mode at the sake of your own philosophy. I think the Dolphins have been good so far at not losing sight of what's important which is to build the team. You have to continue to do that, you can't start thinking well we've done that...time to start winning. No. You NEVER stop building the team. Once you stop building the team then you start the decline. I think some of that thinking got into the Dolphins around '85 with Dan Marino. Time to win NOW and made some poor choices which really hurt the team for years and probably prevented Marino from getting to the SB again rather than the other way around.

Absolutely, but I'm not talking about pulling a Bill O'Brien and sacrificing the future for basically one season. Grier built for the future by getting us extra draft picks and the future is now. I think taking one of our extra 2nd rounders to move up for the best Defensive player we can is a smart move and not messing up the future, it's just securing our present. That is, as long as we get the guy we want at 6. All bets are off if we don't, might even trade back.

No RB is worth it at 18. We have some holes to fill and I'm not even convinced we need a RB at all. Gaskin and Ahmed did a solid job overall despite running behind a below average line with a below average QB. If we want to use one of our 2nd rounders on one then okay but we really should go WR/Defense/Center in that order before we address the RB position.

I could see Miami trading back into late in the 1st to get a RB but don't think they are taking one at 18.

The fumbles scare me. If a RB coughs up the ball at college level you can bet he will be targeted in the big league, and things usually don't end up well...

Harris would be the only back I would consider at #18 - I think he will probably be the only RB picked in the first round (even if it's not by us). Best all around at the position, excellent at yards after contact and no worries with fumbles.

If we get to #36 and the position is not filled and Harris is gone, then I would consider Williams or maybe Etienne. Like Harris, I really like the yards after contact Williams racks up.
