Upon hearing of its release, video-game enthusiasts across the United States were weary of Madden’s competition.  However, after soaring reviews by Gamespot (9.6 out of 10.0), and other well-known publications, Sega Sport’s NFL 2k3 became one of the most popular football games ever created.  It’s smooth, television broadcast style presentation, and ease of game play blew the Madden franchise out of the water, and forever altered the way football, and other sports games, were developed.

“Metal Gear” started as an stealth game in the 8-bit days of the NES, but was reborn on the PS2, with “Metal Gear Solid”, a 3D incarnation, with story-driven, movie-like cut-scenes breaking up the action. Presented like a movie, the series peaked with “Sons of Liberty”, with additions of 1st person aiming, plus all of the normal sequel stuff, like more weapons and levels. Rather than simply handing fans a familiar sequel, though, creator Hideo Kojima opted to go with a complex story and themes, which many saw as epic software storytelling. What makes “Metal Gear Solid 2” special to this day, though, is the controversy that did and does surrounded the game’s surprise twist.

metal gear was by far one of the coolest and most seamless storylines/gameplay.    it was like playing in an interactive movie....the cut scenes were awesome, and the movements and tactics you neede to use were absoloutely sick.  i thought it was one of the best games i had ever played.  then i beat it.  what a fucking let down...i threw the DVD in the trash because the ending story blew so much

I tried to play Metal Gear Solid once.  I borrowed it or rented it or something.  Then I got tired of watching 20 minute cut scenes.  I found the control clunky, too.  I'm not too much for spy games....although I thought Splinter Cell was cool once I got into it.

MGS; another series that has broken ground in many ways when it comes to gameplay.  Kogima is a god among mortals.

Spinter Cell 3 was one of the best games ever made.  The Graphics on XBOX are incredible.  User interface is nothing short of amazing.  I feel that Splinter Cell (most specifically the third one due to the available multiplayer and co-op levels) is a much more worthy comeptitor than anything from the Metal Gear Solid franchise.

I don't know, man.  ...personal preference aside, the Metal Gear series is more popular, goes back longer, sets the stage for spy games, and has a much more relevant story.  It's more important to video game history than Splinter Cell is.
